Join Us - Our Goals

In the late 1990s, the United States agreed to permit around 4,000 Sudanese Lost Boys to come to the U.S. We were spread across the country in various cities. Around 125 of us came to Chicago, Illinois. We arrived right before the 9/11 terrorist attack. Many of our guys felt as if we had brought the war in Africa with us to the U.S.

After four years here, we are readily settled in, having learned new customs, gotten jobs, finished high school or gotten our G.E.D.s, and some have started college. All of us still think about and care for our families and friends back in Sudan and in the refugee camp in Kakuma. We all send money regularly to help buy food, medicines, clothes and pay for relatives' schooling.

It is this caring and concern for our families and our country of Southern Sudan that has led us to form One With Us: Supporting the Rebuilding of Duk Padiet. The war destroyed much of what was in Duk Padiet. For our friends and families to return, to be able to survive and thrive, there needs to be the creation and development of rudimentary services.
